COMPUTER OPERATIONS SPECIALIST III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) computer and peripheral equipment operations work.Work involves monitoring and controlling a computer system and determining equipment setup and run sequences.May train others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Makes adjustments in communications equipment that regulate transmissions according to changing line conditions.

Monitors operating systems for program and/or equipment failures and notifies appropriate personnel.

Observes control and backup procedures for operations, and monitors for compliance.

Performs operational tasks such as mounting and dismounting tapes, disks, and other media, and servicing printers and other peripheral equipment.

Reports failures and abnormalities of files during backup procedures.

Responds to program error messages by finding and correcting problems or terminating the program.

Uses electronic test equipment to identify computer and network equipment failures.

Maintains and prepares operating records and reports.

Documents communication network configuration.

Assists with coordinating site planning and preparation regarding changes to the computer or data communications configurations, and ensures that requirements are met.

May advise on proposed computer applications, including data transmission and the use of data communications equipment.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in operating computer and peripheral equipment or data communications networks.Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by courses in computer equipment operations, is generally preferred.Education and experience may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computer applications, of capabilities and limitations of computer equipment, of automated communications systems, and of the safe operation and use of electronic and electrical test equipment.

Ability to use and operate computer equipment, to interpret electrical and electronic schematics and diagrams, to analyze and solve work problems, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
